Architectural characters

The U.S. Department of the Interior s Cultural Resources Office recommends that the historical significance, integrity, and architectural character of a historic building be assessed before work is undertaken. Your State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) can provide names of preservation professionals to do this type of evaluation. For a directory of State Historic Preservation Offices, contact the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, listed in Appendix B, under Historic Restoration. For sources of more specific information on lead paint hazard control and historic buildings, see the resources listed in Appendix B, under Historic Restoration. [Pg.122]

The following architectural characters were originally derived from examination of a wide range of pleurocarpous and acrocarpous mosses for cladistic study of the evolution of the pleurocarpous mosses (De Luna et al., 1999 Newton and De Luna, 1999), and have subsequently been further modiiied in connection with studies of the early diverging lineages of pleurocarpous mosses (see BeU and Newton, 2004, 2005, and Chapter 3). [Pg.292]

The lower density ol aggregate states in the sub-monolayer architecture decreases the energy transfer efficiency to low energy stales and the fluorescence acquires dominant excitonie character (sec Section 6.6.2.2J. Consider the fluorides of the second-row elements. There is a continuous change in ionic character of the bonds fluorine forms with the elements F, O, N, C, B, Be, and Li. The ionic character increases as the difference in ionization energies increases (see Table 16-11). This ionic character results in an electric dipole in each bond. The molecular dipole will be determined by the sum of the dipoles of all of the bonds, taking into account the geometry of the molecule. Since the properties of the molecule are strongly influenced by the molecular dipole, we shall investigate how it is determined by the molecular architecture and the ionic character of the individual bonds. For this study we shall begin at the left side of the periodic table. [Pg.293]

Interested readers can find information on geographic variation in aboveground architecture and leaf characters of Encelia farinosa in response to temperature and available water in Housman et al. (2002), and a discussion of chemical variation and defense against predation in a report by Wisdom (1985). [Pg.113]

Arrays have been produced on filter supports, in microtiter plate wells and on glass slides coated and modified with one-, two- or 3-dimensional surface architectures as shown schematically in Figure 813 19. Glass offers a number of practical advantages, such as mechanical stability and low autofluorescence. Due to the non-porous character of glass chips, the volume of the hybridization solution can be kept to a minimum and probe-target interaction is not limited by diffusion into pores. However, three-... [Pg.486]

When initially describing the system context, we avoid describing UI specifics, because these can vary. Detailed interactions via the user interface are better treated as a refinement of the abstract use cases that are being carried out. The basic MVC architecture applies to many forms of user interfaces, including graphical, character-based, touch screen, and voice-response. [Pg.522]

SECS uses the goal list to select transforms that appear to have the potential for satisfying the goals, based on the character of the transform. The character of a transform specifies the types of architectural changes the transform may effect. The goals specify desired architectural changes in the molecule. It is the... [Pg.190]

Three-dimensional electrode nanoarchitectures exhibit unique structural features, in the guise of amplified surface area and the extensive intermingling of electrode and electrolyte phases over small length scales. The physical consequences of this type of electrode architecture have already been discussed, and the key components include (i) minimized solid-state transport distances (ii) effective mass transport of necessary electroreactants to the large surface-to-volume electrode and (iii) magnified surface—and surface defect—character of the electrochemical behavior. This new terrain demands a more deliberate evaluation of the electrochemical properties inherent therein. [Pg.242]

Sculptures and architectural structures and ornaments constitute another category of metallic heritage to be conserved. Their unique character within the broader conservation framework is defined by the considerable range of metals and finishes, sizes, and functions. Moreover, an outdoor location demands treatment that will withstand wind, weather, traffic vibrations, and atmospheric pollution. Most of the objects are also accessible to public touch and vandalism. [Pg.129]

I would also like to reemphasize the noncyclic character of these molecules, which I believe provides the way to circumvent the kinetic limitations on the rates of complexing and decomplexing such strongly hydrated ions as Na+, Li+, Ca2+, which I suspect has stood in the way previously of translating the complexing selectivity of macrocyclic com-plexones into effective mediators for the selective permeation of these ions across the bilayer membrane. This may already offer a clue to the architecture of the Na+ selective sites of the cell membrane. [Pg.320]

Indeed, there are otlier formulations of quantum mechanics, all of which have been shown to be entirely equivalent in a formal sense to the matrix-algebraic-molecular-orbital version, that do not in any way require an invocation of orbitals. However, the matrix-algebraic method lends itself most readily to implementation on the architecture of a digital computer, and thus it has come to overwhehningly dominate modem computational chemistry. As a result, the orbitals that are part of the computational machinery for approximately solving the matrix algebraic equations have taken on the character of unassailable parts of the quantum mechanical formalism, but that status is undeserved. [Pg.575]

Moulded terra, for architectural purposes, was also produced in great abundance and of excellent character in England, at the same period with the inlaid tiles. [Pg.778]
