Hardness applications

In treated water for high-pressure boilers or where radiation effects are important, as in some nuclear projects, impurities are measured in very small units (e.g. g/litre or p.p. 10 ), but for most purposes it is convenient to express results in mg/litre. In water analysis, determinations (except occasionally for dissolved gases) are made on a weight/volume basis but some analysts still express results in terms of parts per million (p.p.m.). The difference between mg/litre and p.p.m. is small and for practical purposes the two units are interchtmgeable. For some calculations, the use of milli-equivalents per litre or equivalents per million (e.p.m.) has advantages but has not found much application. Hardness, whatever the constituent salts, is usually expressed as p.p.m. CaCOs (see Table 2.10). [Pg.348]

These applications hardly scratch the surface of the potential of exergy costing. Thermoeconomics is only in its infancy. [Pg.46]

However, in certain applications, hard metals are required on both bonded wafers. In these cases, the so-called microspring solution (Fig. 5.1.14) is a good alternative. [Pg.86]

This section describes the wide and fragmented supply chain information landscape. This is also a landscape with blurry boundaries between categories of applications. Hardly a week passes that one does not hear about a new acronym or revolutionary tool in the domain of supply chain systems. Unless one closely follows the technology, one can be excused for being confused. [Pg.291]

Generally speaking, however, there are two types of coastal engineering applications hard and soft coastal engineering. Although hard stabilization techniques have been used for many years and are considered to be appropriate under certain circumstances, they can also be expensive and, in trying to rectify human impact, can actually disrupt and... [Pg.362]

For some other applications hard TPU needs to be extruded discontinuously, e.g. for the production of cormgated tubes. The extruder is operated in a stop and go rhythm resulting in relative long residence times of the TPU melt in the extruder. It is well known that hard TPU tend to crystallize in the melt and this usually causes irregularities and surface defects in these processes. Because of their reduced crystallization tendency the use of the new E 1200 materials for these discontinuous processes is appropriate. [Pg.564]
