12 Applications Atomic Absorption Spectrometric Determination of Metals 

Two types of catalysts used in polymer manufacture are metallic compounds snch as aluminium alkyls and titanium halides used in low-pressure polyolefin manufactnre. As the presence of residual catalysts can have important effects on polymer properties it is important to be able to determine trace elements which reflect the presence of these substances. 

Elements occurring in polymers and copolymers can be divided into three categories  

Elements that are a constituent part of the monomers used in polymer manufacture, such as nitrogen in acrylonitrile used in the manufacture of, for example, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymers. 

Elements that occur in substances deliberately included in polymer formulations, such as, for example, zinc stearate.
