Appetite beneficial effect

The antidepressant drug fluoxetine Prozac), another compound which promotes serotonergic neurotransmission in the brain, was also shown to reduce appetite and food intake in healthy volunteers (McGuirk and Sil-verstone 1990). It can be effective in the management of binge eating syndrome (see Chapter 6) and bulimia nervosa (see Chapter 5). Its use in uncomplicated obesity is more limited, as any beneficial effect wears off within a few months (Goldstein et al. 1994). 

The beneficial effect of steroid therapy was confirmed 8 years later in a larger group of patients [23]. Curiously, an asymptomatic aortic insufficiency was observed in one third of the patients with CHN [19, 24]. This cardiac complicafion was supposed to be the result of an extrarenal toxicity of Chinese herbs [25]. However, the attention was drawn to the role of appetite suppressants in the development of valvular heart diseases [26]. Since most of the CHN patients we have seen have been given appetite suppressants (fenfluramine, dexfenfluramine, phentermine alone or in combination) besides the Chinese herbs, the puzzling association of aortic insufficiency with CHN may more likely be linked to the concomitant use of (dex)-fenflu-... 

At still greater dilutions than the foregoing, the effect of ozone has been repeatedly proved to be beneficial. In cases of anaemia it appears to stimulate the multiplication of blood corpuscles, to increase the appetite, and to raise the general standard of health of the sufferer. Asthma, bronchitis, pleurisy, and pneumonia have likewise been relieved by inhalation of ozonised air, and it is not impossible that similar treatment may prove beneficial to consumptives. 

The use of the maitake D fraction can ameliorate varions side effects secondary to chemotherapy. Beneficial improvements were found in 90% of patients and included ameliorations of lost appetite, vomiting, nausea, and hair loss as well as increased counts of white blood cell pain was reduced in 83%. It is worth repeating that there are strong indications that while maitake extract contributes to tumor reduction without a high loss of white blood cells, it also reduces in many cases pain, hair loss, nausea, and other side effects usually associated with chemotherapy.
