Altered expression pattern and the presence of galectins in different tissues during development [48, 63] lead to the question of their biological role(s). No evident function can be attributed to these proteins, except for galectin-3 which has been proposed as a factor involved in pre-mRNA splicing [64], Independently of a possible role during development, it was demonstrated that galectins are directly involved in apoptosis and part of a recent review was devoted to this aspect [48].
