API gravity range

The four oils in Class 1, from Wells CL-20, CL-99, VLC-531, and VLC-642, are dark olive green and are very light, with API gravities ranging from 36.6° to 42.2°. 

Water, thus, has an API gravity of 10.0, and most crude oils and petroleum fractions have values of API gravity in the range of 10 to 80. Light hydrocarbons (n-pentane and lighter) have values of API gravity ranging upward from 92.8. 

Fuel oils are generally sold on a volume basis, with 60°F as the base temperature. Correction factors are given in Fig. 6.25 for converting known volumes at other temperatures to the 60°F (15°C) standard base.This correction is also dependent on the API gravity range as illustrated by the three parametric curves of Fig. 6.24. 

This section compares the properties of asphaltenes precipitated from various crude oils with API gravity ranging from 10° to 33° (Leyva et al., 2012). 

The physical and chemical properties of various heavy crude oils with API gravity ranging from 10° to 21° are presented in Table 1.9.
