Antiviral activity against plant virus infection

Although relatively little work has been done on natural antivirals against plant viruses, several reports concerning antiviral activity against plant virus infection have been recorded for example, yeast mannans with antiviral activity against the tobacco mosaic virus infection in tobacco plants [136], and lichenan PS from Iceland moss which exhibited antiviral activity against the potato viruses [8],... 

In addition, the antiviral activity of several other kinds of natural products was also reported. Terpenoids caesahnin B and bonducellpin D from the seeds of traditional Chinese medicinal plant Caesalpinia minax exhibited inhibitory activities on the PI-3 virus in vitro by cytopathogenic effects (CPE) reduction assay (Jiang et al. 2002). Hippomanin A from Phyllanthus urinaria Linnea (Euphorbiaceae), which is a commonly used traditional medicinal plant in oriental countries, exhibited antiviral activity against HSV-2 but not HSV-1 infection (Fig. 3.7 Yang et al. 2007). 

Other biological products with reported antiviral activity include phagicin, a virus protein from X-lnfected E. coli cells with tissue culture and Hi vivo activity against vaccinia and herpes simplex aqueous extracts of giant puffballs and the black Japanese forest mushroom with activity against influenza A2/japan/305/57 infections of calf kidney cells and influenza A/PR8 infections of mice and hot water extracts of the bark of the Japanese medicinal plant Sambucus sieboldlana which reduced mortality of mice infected with Columbia SK and LCM virus ...
