Antiproliferative action

As a logical step in studies of the antiproliferative action of pool components in tumor cells we studied the antitumor activity of peptides in combination with standard antitumor chemotherapeutic agents (vincristin, metatrexate, cis-platin, epirubicin) [48]. [Pg.31]

Mechanism of action is not clearly understood but direct antiproliferative action against tumour cells and modulation of the host immune response may play important roles. [Pg.379]

Tazarotene (Tazorac) is an acetylenic retinoid prodrug that is hydrolyzed to its active form by an esterase. The active metabolite, tazarotenic acid, binds to retinoic acid receptors, resulting in modified gene expression. The precise mechanism of action in psoriasis is unknown but may relate to both anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative actions. Tazarotene is absorbed percutaneously, and teratogenic systemic concentrations may be achieved if applied to more than 20% of total body surface area. Women of childbearing potential must therefore be advised of the risk prior to initiating therapy, and adequate birth control measures must be utilized while on therapy. [Pg.1456]

The CMIA work with steroids marked with Re(CO)3 led to the early recognition of the potential of this class of compounds for the diagnosis and therapy of steroid receptorpositive breast cancer. Complex (184) shows higher binding to estrogen receptors than the parent steroid. Complex (185) also binds to the tamoxyfen receptor and shows an antiproliferative action comparable to hydroxytamoxifen, a potent breast cancer drug. ... [Pg.4046]

Heparin is able to inhibit smooth-muscle cells (SMCs) proliferation in vitro. SMCs are present in blood vessel walls and may proliferate in the case of an internal injury. The antiproliferative action of heparin is due to its internalization in SMCs, which is probably mediated by membrane receptors. Heparin-based affinity chromatography of SMCs membrane extracts allowed the separation of a few proteins, which could be implicated in the growth inhibition [15]. [Pg.301]

Interferons (IFNs) are extremely potent cytokines that pos-se.ss antiviral, immunomodulating. and antiproliferative actions.- IFNs are synthesized by infected cells in response to various inducers (Fig. I l-l) and. in turn, elicit either an antiviral stale in neighboring cells or a natural killer cell response that destroys the initially infected cell (Fig. 11-2). There are three classes of human IFNs that possess signifi-ctinl aniiviral activity. Tlicsc are IFN-a (mote than 20 subtypes). IFN-/J(2 subtypes), and IFN-y. IFN- is used clini-eally in a rcconibinani fonn (called interferon alfa). IFN-fi (Betaseron) is a recombinant form marketed for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. [Pg.373]

The selectivity of coxibs for COX-2 over COX-1 gives them antiinflammatory and antiproliferative actions with rednced G1 side effects, bnt it also makes them ineffective as antiplatelet agents and thns increases risks from myocardial infarction and stroke. [Pg.301]

Interferon alfa-n3 is an immnnomodnlator. These small proteins bind to specific cell membranes and initiate complex seqnences, intracellnlar events, inclnding induction of certain enzymes that prodnce antiproliferative action against tumor cells and inhibit viral replication in virus-infected cells. They are used in the treatment of condyloma acuminatum. [Pg.356]

Using concentrations of heparin, that are inhibitory to SMC proliferation, causes SM-type a-actin expression to be up-regulated [295,296]. In plasma-derived serum however, heparin is not able to modify a-actin expression, indicating that its action is related to an antiproliferative action [296]. Barzu et al. [297], have isolated in vitro a subpopulation of rat aortic SMC that is heparin-resistant in terms of growth inhibition, but differentiation responsive (increased SM-type a-actin expression) to heparin treatment. This finding is in line with the theory that heparin acts on SMC differentiation and proliferation through distinct pathways. [Pg.280]
