Anticonvulsants sedative-hypnotics

Anxiolytics are compounds that act primarily to refleve the symptoms of anxiety although such agents can also be used as anticonvulsants, sedatives, hypnotics, and anesthetic agents (see Anesthetics). The principal class of anxiolytics, the BZs, shows dependence HabiUty (5) whereas newer agents such as buspkone [36505-84-7] and ritanserine [8705-43-2] produce antianxiety effects via central serotoninergic systems (6). [Pg.530]

Other apphcations of sodium bromide iaclude use ia the photographic iadustry both to make light-sensitive silver bromide [7785-23-1] emulsions and to lower the solubiUty of silver bromides during the developing process use as a wood (qv) preservative in conjunction with hydrogen peroxide (14) as a cocatalyst along with cobalt acetate [917-69-1] for the partial oxidation of alkyl side chains on polystyrene polymers (15) and as a sedative, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant. The FDA has, however, indicated that sodium bromide is ineffective as an over-the-counter sleeping aid for which it has been utilized (16). [Pg.189]

The pseudo-barbiturate , 2-methyl-3-o-tolylquinazolin-4(3H)-one (methaqualone, Revonal 1017) has an even wider spectrum of activities than do the barbiturates proper it appears to be quite widely used as- a sedative, hypnotic, anticonvulsant, antispasmodic and local anaesthetic agent (63MI21301, b-75MI21301>. [Pg.150]

The close structural resemblance between the sedative-hypnotic and anticonvulsant agents was mentioned earlier. It is interesting that the two activities can be related in at least one case by a simple chemical transformation. Thus, reductive desulfurization of the thiobarbituric acid, 158, affords primi-... [Pg.276]

Benzodiazepines have found wide therapeutic applications as anxiolytics, sedatives, hypnotics, anticonvulsants, and central muscle relaxants. [Pg.252]

Long-acting barbiturates used as sedative-hypnotics and also for their anticonvulsant effects include phenobarbital (Luminal) and mephobarbital (Mebaral). [Pg.139]

Glutarimides may be regarded as oxidized piperidines, and many drugs containing this moiety are sedatives and anticonvulsants. A spiro derivative, alonimid (105) is such a sedative-hypnotic agent. It can be prepared by K t-butoxide catalyzed biscyano-ethylation of phenylacetonitrile, leading to 101. Alkaline hydrolysis produces tricarboxylic acid 102 which is smoothly Converted to the glutaric acid anhydride (103) with acetic anhydride. Friedel-Crafts... [Pg.295]

Anticonvulsant A drug used in the treatment of epilepsy, and to reduce the risk of seizures during detoxification from sedative-hypnotics. More recently these drugs have been used in the clinical management of bipolar disorders. [Pg.237]

Barbiturate The family name for a group of drugs with anticonvulsant, anaesthetic and sedative-hypnotic properties. Examples include amylobarbitone and pheno-barbitone. The problem of dependence and the introduction of safer benzodiazepine alternatives has resulted in a marked reduction in their clinical use. [Pg.238]

Information about prescription drag use alcohol or other substance use family medical history and history of trauma, depression, or head injury should be obtained. It is important to rule out medication use as a contributor or cause of symptoms (e.g., anticholinergics, sedatives, hypnotics, opioids, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants) as contributors to dementia symptoms. Other medications may contribute to delirium, e.g.,... [Pg.741]

Buspirone is a 5-HT1A partial agonist that lacks anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, sedative-hypnotic, motor impairment, and dependence-producing properties. [Pg.759]

While the individual drugs in the benzodiazepine group differ in potency, all benzodiazepines in common use have anxiolytic, sedative-hypnotic, anticonvulsant and muscle-relaxant activity in ascending order of dose. The main clinical difference between the individual drugs lies in the time of onset of their therapeutic effect, and the intensity and duration of their clinical activity. [Pg.86]
