AB aggregation stimulates ROS production, which may lead to cyclic or self-propagating oxidative damage. The DHA metabolite neuroprotectin D1 promoted neuronal survival and anti-apoptotic pathways that attenuated AB42 neurotoxicity (Lukiw et al., 2005). AD and mild cognitive disorder subjects also showed lower levels of antioxidant defense systems. 

NO is a free radical gas that exerts nitrosylation of a wide range of proteins and modification of biological functions of the cell. Thus, NO donors are candidates for a new approach to drugs that inhibit tumor cell survival and anti-apoptotic pathways by conventional cancer therapy. NO donors continuously produce NO gas after various time periods (seconds to days). A large variety of nitric oxide donors are available as tools for tumor treatments. The details of NO donors are well documented in recent reviews (Bonavida et al. 2008 Huerta et al. 2008 Yamamoto and Bing 2000). In this section, we introduce a third category of NO donors and their anti-tumor functions. These types of cytotoxic effects of NO are illustrated in Figs. 6.1 and 6.2.
