An anthrax vaccine is available but its use is currently reserved for laboratory personnel who may come in contact with the disease and for military personnel. The vaccine currently in use by the United States military is a sterile, acellular vaccine known as AVA (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed). It is not currently licensed for use with civilian populations, although there are protocols under investigation.

Observational studies Anthrax vaccine adsorbed (AVA) is the only US licensed AVA vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration. In recent years, the safety of anthrax vaccine has been controversial, stimulating reviews of its safety and efficacy. During 1 March 1998 to 14 January 2007, about 6 milhon doses of AVA vaccine were administered. As of 16 January 2007, 4753 reports of adverse events after the use of AVA had been submitted to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) [ll ]. The most commonly reported were myalgia, arthralgia, pain, headache, depression, asthenia , rash, anxiety and insomnia, and back pain. Reports to VAERS did not definitively link any serious unexpected risks to this vaccine, and a review of deaths... 

In addition to anthrax vaccine, the organization was a licensed producer of diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and pertusis vaccines, adsorbed immune serum globulin (human) pertusis vaccine adsorbed rabies vaccine adsorbed and tetanus toxoid, adsorbed. Anthrax adsorbed vaccine is nottoxoided but relies on the use of cultural conditions that favour production of the protective antigen (binding and internalization factor) rather than the lethal factor (protease) and oedema factor (adenyl cyclase) components of the toxin. Selective adsorption to aluminium hydroxide or phosphate also slows release of residual toxin.
