The problems associated with leaving infected plant residues on the soil surface after harvest are thought to be particularly acute with maize and in areas with high precipitation during anthesis (see Section 17.6.1 above and Beck et al., 1997). 

Capsaicinoids start to accumulate 20 days post anthesis and synthesis usually persists through Suit development [59, 62,73], The site of synthesis and accumulation of the capsaicinoids is the epidermal cells of the placenta in the fmit (Fig. 8.5) [60, 72, 73], Ultimately, the capsaicinoids are secreted extracellularly into receptacles between the cuticle layer and the epidermal layer of the placenta [74]. These receptacles of accumulated capsaicinoids are macroscopically visible as pale yellow to orange droplets or blisters on the placenta of many chile types (Fig. 8.5).

Inspection of flower primordia in the Japanese cucumber, Somohanhiak, revealed that both staminate and pistillate primordia are present in each flower, and sex expression at anthesis is apparently dependent upon the relative growth rates of the two types of primordia (10). Perhaps this is also true for other cucumber varieties. Thus, environmental or chemical alterations in flower sex expression probably fall under the category of regulation which is an effect on development or maturation, rather than induction or differentiation. 

Auxins in seeded Emperor rose from a low level just after anthesis to a high level during the first few weeks (Figure 4). In Seedless Emperor (not in other seedless varieties) auxins are at a low level after anthesis (Figure 5). However, there is a second smaller rise in auxin content at about time sugaring begins. 

In this respect, McCue et al.260 showed that cDNAs encoding BEI and BEII of wheat (Triticum aestivum cv Cheyenne) shared extensive identity with BE sequences reported for other plants. Using the cDNAs, they studied the steady-state RNA levels of the branching enzymes during development. For BE2, its RNA was detectable five days post-anthesis (DPA) and reached a maximum at 10 DPA. BEI steady-state levels started rising at 10 DPA, peaking at 15 DPA. Levels of all messages declined at 20-25 DPA.
