ANFO explosive

The taconite iron ore deposits now being worked in the Lake Superior region, USA, are also extremely tough. The development of inexpensive but powerful ANFO explosives has made their exploration possible. [Pg.46]

Ammonium nitrate / fuel oil (ANFO) explosives are a mixture of 94% AN and 6% fuel oil. They are low-cost explosives that are used for coal and metal mining, quarrying and construction. Low density prills are used because they are porous and absorb the fuel oil. ANFO is safe to handle and easy to make240. [Pg.265]

Trade names of -> ANFO explosives marketed in Germany by MSW-CHEMIE, DYNAMIT NOBEL and WASAGCHEMIE in 25-kg carton packs or in containers of about 900 kg capacity. Andex 2 contains a small percentage of rock salt. [Pg.69]

USEBLASTING - Useful in blasting due to the fact that it is easy and very inexpensive to prepare. This prilled form of the usual ANFO explosives is attractive to the blaster because in nearly all applications this type of prilled ANFO explosive will have a higher detonation rate and therefore an increased performance over it s counterpart. [Pg.13]

This is a very interesting development of the ANFO explosives. While being very simple, it effectively sensitizes the fertilizer grade of AN when mixed with diesel, so that one blasting cap will detonate the resulting mix. It makes use of the tendancy of even small amounts of water to effect the crystalline structure of the prills in such a way that effective density is lowered. This, in conjunction with available fuel, yields an explosive that is cap sensitive. This is one of the most simple cap sensitive explosive compositions in this book. [Pg.13]

Do-It-Yourself Ammonium Nitrate - Fuel Oil (ANFO) Explosives. Under this name are known expls prepd at the site of blasting operations, either by pouring prilled AN (such as DuPont s SP—2 Prills which have an apparent density of 0.80 to 0.85g/cc) into the dry borehole and adding the oil later, or by adding the oil. to the bag contg prills immediately before pouring into the borehole. Another similar method has been recently devised by which the oil is introduced into the unopened prill bag by means of an oil probe thru which the oil is metered. The un-... [Pg.438]
