Anesthetics sodium pentothal

Thiourea (H2NCNH2) reacts with diethyl malonate and its alkyl derivatives in the same way that urea does Give the structure of the product obtained when thiourea is used instead of urea in the synthesis of pentobarbital The anesthetic thiopental (Pentothal) sodium is the sodium salt of this product yWhat IS the structure of this compound ... [Pg.901]

The ultra-short-acting barbiturates include methohexital sodium (Brevi-tal) and thiopental sodium (Pentothal). These agents are used as anesthetics and are administered intravenously. Barbiturates with short-to-intermediate duration of action are used for their sedative-hypnotic effect in the treatment of anxiety. These medications include amobarbital (Amytal), butabarbital (Butisol), sodium pentobarbital (Nembutal), and secobarbital (Seconal). [Pg.139]

DETAILS - Sodium pentothal is one of the most widely used anesthetics in medical and dental practice. It is also the drug of choice for suicidal doctors, so its lethal potential is well proven. It is an ultra-short acting depressant of the central nervous system. It induces hypnosis and anesthesia, but not analgesia (pain relief) Hypnosis is produced within 30 to 40 seconds of injection. [Pg.114]

Sodium pentothal (also called thiopental sodium) is commonly used as an intravenous anesthetic. The onset of anesthesia and the loss of consciousness occur within seconds of its administration. Care must be taken when administering sodium pentothal because the dose for effective anesthesia is 75% of the lethal dose. Because of its toxicity, it cannot he used as the sole anesthetic. It is generally used to induce anesthesia before an inhalation anesthetic is administered. Propofol is an anesthetic that has all the properties of the perfect anesthetic It can he used as the sole anesthetic by intravenous drip, it has a rapid and pleasant induction period and a wide margin of safety, and recovery from the drug is rapid and pleasant. [Pg.453]

With increased doses, the patient experiences a hypnotic effect causing the patient to fall asleep. Even higher doses of sedative-hypnotics anesthetize the patient. Such is the case of the ultra-short-acting barbiturate thiopental sodium (Pentothal) that produces anesthesia. [Pg.298]

Sodium Pentothal is a short-acting barbiturate derivative used as a general anesthetic and known in popular culture as a truth serum. It is synthesized like other barbiturates (see the A Deeper Look at the end of this chapter), using thiourea, (H2N)2C=S, in place of urea. How would you synthesize Sodium Pentothal ... [Pg.903]
