Anesthesia ethyl ether

Specifications. Ethyl ether is commercially avaHable in the foHowing grades USP anesthesia, absolute (ACS), industrial, solvent (cone), and synthetic. Specifications vary, depending on the consumer and use. In many instances, the ether has to meet a specific test written into the specification, eg, it may be important that the ether is completely anhydrous or free from alcohol and aldehyde. [Pg.427]

Concentrations of ethyl ether ranging from 100,000 to 150,000 are required for induction of human anesthesia however, exposure at this concentration may also produce fatalities from respiratory arrest. Maintenance of surgical anesthesia is achieved at... [Pg.333]

Ethyl ether (diethyl ether [CAS 60-29-7]) Vapors irritating to eyes and respiratoiy tract. A CNS depressant and anesthetic agent tolerance may develop to this effect. Overexposure produces nausea, headache, dizziness, anesthesia, and respiratory arrest. Evidence for adverse effects on fetal development in test animals. ... [Pg.573]

A technician was remotely handling an old, opened, metal can of anesthesia grade ethyl ether to add more ethyl alcohol as an inhibitor. Enough inhibitor was thought to be present, so the ether was not considered hazardous. The liquid level in the can was low so the technician had to tilt the can to pipette out an aliquot for the peroxide test strip. As the technician turned the can... [Pg.62]

After anesthesia was induced with ethyl ether in ten 200-g Wister male rats (CLEA Japan Inc., Tokyo, Japan), their backs were shaved and an incision (2-cm long and 2-cm deep) was made. The polymer films (1.0 X 0.5 cm), which were sterilized with ethylene oxide gas, were subcutaneously implanted. An antibacterial drug, piperacillin sodium 20 mg/kg (Sankyo Pharmaceutical Co., Tokyo, Japan), was administered intraperitoneally once after the implantation procedure. Neither cleaning of the implanted site nor further drug administration was made throughout the implantation period. [Pg.303]

For use in anesthesia the USP (22) also recognizes slightly less pure grades ethyl oxide (solvent ether), ether abs, and reagent-grade ether. [Pg.428]
