Androgens biological actions

This drug blocks binding of androgens to tissue-muscle cells and prevents biological action of androgens, inclnding in pancreatic tumor cells.

How do steroid hormone receptors accomplish such different biological actions as those exemplified by glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, by progesterone, oestrogens, and androgens ... 

The adrenal cortex is rich in sterols, and its internal secretion appears to be steroid in character. The cortin complex, originally obtained in crystalline form by Kendall, Reichstein and their colleagues, has now been resolved into a mixture of active and inactive compounds, some of which contain the Cu nucleus. The term corticosterone is applied to the compound, C i. H3JO4, which is reported to have the biological action of the cortical hormone. A steroid with weak androgenic properties has also been isolated from the lipoid fraction of the cortex (p. 415). 

In Chapter 4 the therapeutic action of androgens and anabolic agents is examined. In Chapter 5 some 650 androgens and anabolic agents are compiled. The literature is covered through 1967. Some compounds could not be incorporated into the tables owing to the lack of biologic data.
