Copper is required for all forms of aerobic and most forms of anaerobic life. In humans, the biological function of copper is related to the enzymatic action of specific essential copper proteins (66). Lack of these copper enzymes is considered a primary factor in cerebral degeneration, depigmentation, and arterial changes. Because of the abundance of copper in most human diets, chemically significant copper deficiency is extremely rare (67). [Pg.212]

The primary advantage of aerobic digestion is that it produces a biologically stable end product suitable for subsequent treatment in a variety of processes. Volatile solids reductions similar to anaerobic digestion are possible. Some parameters affecting the aerobic digestion process are ... [Pg.503]

Linear primary alcohol sulfates can also be biodegraded under anaerobic conditions but the process seems to be limited to the hydrolysis of the sulfate [407]. [Pg.294]

The rapid repression of pre-existing protein synthesis caused by anaerobic treatment is correlated with a near complete dissociation of polysomes in primary roots of soybeans (Lin Key, 1967) and maize (E.S. Dennis and A.J. Pryor, personal communication). This does not result from degradation of aerobic mRNAs, because the mRNAs encoding the pre-existing proteins remain translatable in an in vitro system at least five hours after anaerobic treatment is initiated (Sachs et al., 1980). This is in agreement... [Pg.168]

If a patient aspirates his or her oral contents and pneumonia develops, then anaerobes and Streptococcus spp. are the primary pathogens. Antibiotics active against these organisms include penicillin G, ampicillin/sulbactam, clindamycin, and metronidazole. [Pg.1057]

During start-up, the microbial population distribution in the biofilm varies with time. Initial colonization of the particle may be by one or more species that alter the surface favorably for colonization by other species. For instance, in the operation of a butyrate-degrading fluidized bed bioreactor, methanogens attached to the sand particles early in the start-up process and produced a primary matrix of heteropolysaccharides that allowed attachment of other bacterial species (Sreekrishnan et al., 1991 Zellner et al., 1991 Yongming et al., 1993). This is contrary to findings in an acetate-propionate-butyrate degrading reactor, in which facultative anaerobes were found to be the initial colonizers (Lauwers et al., 1990). [Pg.633]
