A series of twenty-nine substituted phenols (e.g., alkyl, phenyl, lluoro, diloro, bromo, nitro, and multisubstituted) was studied using a diol column and a 50/50 chloroform/iso-octane mobile phase [611]. In general, retention increased as the polar nature of the solute increased (e.g., in order of increasing retention 2,4,6-tributylphenol < 4-amylphenol < 4-methylphenol < phenol < 4-chlorophenol < 4-nitrophenol). As might be expected, this system showed good isomer selectivity (A for 3-nitrophenol = 4.20, for 4-nitrophenol = 5.50). However this selectivity was not as pronounced as that found using an underivatized silica support. [Pg.270]

The deep UV induced reactions appear to be slightly different from X-ray and EB induced reactions. Deep UV exposure in air can induce an increase in solubility of SPP, indicating that indenecar-boxylic acid is produced. IR spectra of SPP exposed to deep UV are shown in Figure 11. In this case, we used a mono-functional dissolution inhibitor, tert-amylphenol diazonaphthoquinone sulfonyl ester, instead of a multi-functional sensitizer, DNQ, because the IR spectrum of a mono-functional ester is easier to interpret than that of DNQ. A second series of reports in the literature purport to discuss the toxicity of phenol to newborns. These, however, deal with an excessive level of hyperbilirubinemia, or jaundice, in newborns in hospital nurseries where a phenolic disinfectant detergent was used to clean the nursery and its equipment (bassinets and mattresses) (Doan et al. 1979, Wysowski et al. 1978). Review of these reports indicated that the detergent did not contain phenol per se. rather it contained more complex phenolics such as o-benzyl-p-chlorophenol and p-tertiary amylphenol. [Pg.134]
