Drugs that may affect aspirin include activated charcoal, ammonium chloride, ascorbic acid or methionine, antacids and urinary alkalinizers, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, corticosteroids, and nizatidine. Drugs that may be affected by aspirin include alcohol, ACE inhibitors, anticoagulants (oral), beta-adrenergic blockers, heparin, loop diuretics, methotrexate, nitroglycerin, NSAIDs, probenecid and sulfinpyrazone, spironolactone, sulfonylureas and exogenous insulin, and valproic acid. [Pg.914]

Other substances to which people have been exposed have been shown to alter the toxic effects of ammonia. Methionine sulfoximine, administered by intraperitoneal injection, suppressed the tonic convulsions produced by intravenous injection of ammonium chloride in mice (Hindfelt and Plum 1975 Warren and Schenker 1964). Intraperitoneal injection of alpha-methylglutamic acid also exerts a protective effect against hyperammonemia in rats (Lamar 1970). Nicotinohydroxamic acid and neomycin administered orally reduce blood ammonia levels and increase excretion of urea in treated rats (Haiada et al. 1985). Ethanol exerted a protective effect on acute ammonia intoxication in mice (O Connor et al. [Pg.105]

First, there are many variants of the Strecker method, two of which have been noted above, viz., in the syntheses of alanine (Ala, A) and methionine (Met, M). However, the Strecker variants all involve the addition of cyanide (CN") to an imine (or equivalent) the latter formed in situ from a carbonyl compound and a suitable equivalent of ammonia (e.g., ammonia [NH3], ammonium chloride [NH4CI], and ammonium acetate [NH4O2CCH3]). The generalized pathway is shown in Scheme 12.57. [Pg.1177]

The chloride is used to manufacture silicones, tetramethyl lead and triptane (2,2,3 trimethylbutane). Lesser uses include the manufacture of butyl rubber, higher halogenated methanes, methyl cellulose, quaternary ammonium compounds, methyl mercaptan, methionine, fungicides and pesticides (primarily the Me-arsenate herbicides). Recently the chlorinated fluorocarbons have replaced CH3CI as high volume refrigerants and propellants (ref. 32) Tables 12 and 13 list the chemical and physical properties and potential numbers of workers exposed to the monohalomethanes. [Pg.367]

Platinum compounds have been widely used. These include the PtCl ion or the less reactive cis or trans platinum diaminodichloride compounds. At acid pH they react with methionine, cystine disulphides, N-termini or histidine. In the presence of ammonium sulphate, the chloride ions are rapidly substituted by ammonium ions to form [Pt(NH3)4] which is unreactive. Square planar negatively charged complexes such as Pt(CN)4 have been found to be effective in binding at the nucleotide-binding site in dehydrogenases. The cyanide ligands are firmly bound to the metal and are not displaced by protein atoms. [Pg.364]
