This chapter covers the recent advances in amidocarbonylations, cyclohydrocarbonylations, aminocarbonylations, cascade carbonylative cyclizations, carbonylative ring-expansion reactions, thiocarbonylations, and related reactions from 1993 to early 2005. In addition, technical development in carbonylation processes with the use of microwave irradiation as well as new reaction media such as supercritical carbon dioxide and ionic liquids are also discussed. These carbonylation reactions provide efficient and powerful methods for the syntheses of a variety of carbonyl compounds, amino acids, heterocycles, and carbocycles. [Pg.512]

In this brief article, I will focus on the ways we have learned from the chemistry of the life process itself. However, I must first call attention to another part of natural chemistry that has an effect on chemical thinking the field called the Chemistry of Natural Products. Chemists have explored nature and have discovered several special types of chemicals sugars, fats, ter-penes, alkaloids, acetogenins, amino acids, heterocyclic coloring matters, macrocyclic lactones, steroid hormones, and so on. (2). These compounds have been produced by living organisms and they are secreted by or isolated from them. This field is concerned with the substances of nature and the biochemical processes by which they are formed. [Pg.1207]

Several factors affect the volatility and stability of a peptide derivative, not least of these being the number and nature of the constituent amino acids. Heterocyclic and aromatic amino acids reduce volatility while those containing sulphur tend to decrease the thermal stability. Small naturally occurring peptides which are not derived from proteins often contain only aliphatic amino acids which lack functional groups in the side chains. Peptides of this type of up to about ten amino acids, after conversion to suitable derivatives, are amenable to analysis by mass spectrometry, e.g. [164]. A variety of derivatives has been reported and include N-trifluoroacetyl peptide esters [136,165], N-acetyl peptide esters [166-168], aromatic N-acyl peptide esters [169-172], and per-methylated N-acyl peptides [173]. The principal modes of the electron impact induced fragmentation of these peptide derivatives are well established and have been summarised in recent reviews [174,175]. Although the spectra of the permethylated derivatives [176] are perhaps the simplest and easiest to interpret and are now frequently used, the N-acyl peptide esters have been widely and successfully employed. [Pg.40]

Heterocyclic enamines A -pyrroline and A -piperideine are the precursors of compounds containing the pyrrolidine or piperidine rings in the molecule. Such compounds and their N-methylated analogs are believed to originate from arginine and lysine (291) by metabolic conversion. Under cellular conditions the proper reaction with an active methylene compound proceeds via an aldehyde ammonia, which is in equilibrium with other possible tautomeric forms. It is necessary to admit the involvement of the corresponding a-ketoacid (12,292) instead of an enamine. The a-ketoacid constitutes an intermediate state in the degradation of an amino acid to an aldehyde. a-Ketoacids or suitably substituted aromatic compounds may function as components in active methylene reactions (Scheme 17). [Pg.295]

It possesses as part of its structure an imidazole group, a five-membered heterocyclic ring possessing two nitrogen atoms.
