Dr. Fingas is on the editorial board of the Journal of Hazardous Materials, the Spill Science and Technology Bulletin, and the Journal of Micro-Column Separations, and has served as guest editor for several special issues of these publications. In 1999, he was appointed to the United States Academy of Sciences and is a member of an eight-person committee to review the sources, fate, and effects of oil in the sea. He is vice-chairman of the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) F-20 Committee on Spill Standards, and chairman of the In-situ Oil Spill Burning Committee.

The American Society for Testing and Materials (1916 Race St., Philadelphia 3) issues every three years with annual supplements its Book of A STM Standards currently in 11 volumes. The Society also publishes a volume on Chemical Analysis of Metals. Each volume has a classified and numerical list of its contents and a subject index. In addition a separate collective index is published annually. The Society also produces the ASTMProceedings, the Yearbook and a monthly bulletin Materials Research and Standards.
