Aluminum nitrate, reaction with sodium

Nitric acid reacts with all metals except gold, iridium, platinum, rhodium, tantalum, titanium, and certain alloys. It reacts violentiy with sodium and potassium to produce nitrogen. Most metals are converted iato nitrates arsenic, antimony, and tin form oxides. Chrome, iron, and aluminum readily dissolve ia dilute nitric acid but with concentrated acid form a metal oxide layer that passivates the metal, ie, prevents further reaction. [Pg.39]

Fenoprofen, 2-(3-phenoxyphenyl)propionic acid, is made into its monohydroxyalurninum or dihydroxyalurninum salt by reaction of the sodium salt of the acid with aluminum nitrate or chloride under pH control (90,91). Nitration of hydroxypropiophenone (7-1) followed by conversion of the phenol to its methyl ether by means of methyl iodide provides the intermediate (7-2) the nitro group is then reduced to the corresponding amine (7-3) by catalytic reduction. The newly introduced amine is then replaced by a nitrile group by successive conversion to the diazonium salt by means of nitrous acid followed by treatment with cuprous cyanide (7-4). Reaction with aluminum chloride removes the methyl ether to afford the ortho acylphenol (7-5). This is converted to the chromone (7-6) as above by reaction with benzoyl chloride and sodium benzoate. The nitrile is next hydrolyzed to the carboxylic acid (7-7) by means of sulfuric acid. The acid is then converted to its acid chloride by means of thionyl chloride and that treated with 2-(A -piperidyl)ethanol (7-8). There is thus obtained flavoxate (7-9) [8], a muscle relaxant whose name reflects its flavone nucleus. [Pg.434]

Chromium metal is commercially produced in the United States by the reduction of chromite ore with carbon, aluminum, or silicon, and subsequent purification. Sodium chromate and dichromate are produced by roasting chromite ore with soda ash. Most other chromium compounds are produced from sodium chromate and dichromate (Hartford 1979 Westbrook 1979). For example, basic chromic sulfate (Cr(0H)S04), commonly used in tanning, is commercially produced by the reduction of sodium dichromate with organic compounds (e.g., molasses) in the presence of sulfuric acid or by the reduction of dichromate with sulfur dioxide. Lead chromate, commonly used as a pigment, is produced by the reaction of sodium chromate with lead nitrate or by reaction of lead monoxide with chromic acid solution (IARC 1990). [Pg.318]
