Aluminum borates structure

Yttrium aluminum borate, YAlj (603)4 (abbreviated to YAB), is a nonlinear crystal that is very attractive for laser applications when doped with rare earth ions (Jaque et al, 2003). Figure 7.9 shows the low-temperature emission spectrum of Sm + ions in this crystal. The use of the Dieke diagram (see Figure 6.1) allows to assign this spectrum to the " Gs/2 Hg/2 transitions. The polarization character of these emission bands, which can be clearly appreciated in Figure 7.9, is related to the D3 local symmetry of the Y + lattice ions, in which the Sm + ions are incorporated. The purpose of this example is to use group theory in order to determine the Stark energy-level structure responsible for this spectrum. [Pg.257]

Characterization of Substituted Boron. We used solid state -B NMR and X-ray diffraction data to distinguish occluded borates from boron substituted into the zeolite framework. When an element replaces aluminum or silicon in a zeolite structure, the local coordination environment changes to accommodate the new ion. Since B + is a much smaller ion than Al "1", the unit cell axes contract when boron replaces aluminum in the framework. The ionic radii of trivalent B and A1 in a tetrahedral environment are 0.25 and 0.53, respectively (1). The magnitude of the contraction is dependent upon the level of substitution (17). [Pg.379]

Boron s chemistry is so different from that of the other elements in this group that it deserves separate discussion. Chemically, boron is a nonmetal in its tendency to form covalent bonds, it shares more similarities with carbon and silicon than with aluminum and the other Group 13 elements. Like carbon, boron forms many hydrides like silicon, it forms oxygen-containing minerals with complex structures (borates). Compounds of boron have been used since ancient times in the preparation of glazes and borosilicate glasses, but the element itself has proven extremely difficult to purify. The pure element has a wide diversity of allotropes (different forms of the pure element), many of which are based on the icosahedral Bj2 unit. [Pg.256]

Boron has been included as a neutron absorber in various materials in addition to concrete. For example, borated graphite, a mixture of elemental boron and graphite, has been used in fast-reactor shields. Boral, consisting of boron carbide (B4C) and aluminum, and epoxy resins and resin-impregnated wood laminates incorporating boron have been used for local shielding purposes. Boron has also been added to steel for shield structures to reduce secondary gamma-ray production. In special situations, where a shield has consisted of a heavy metal and water, it has been beneficial to add a soluble boron compound to the water. [Pg.181]
