Anionic galactomannans, which are derived from guar gum, in which the hydroxyl groups are partially esterified with sulfonate groups that result from 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid and l-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl sulfonic acid [1872], have been claimed to be suitable as thickeners. The composition is capable of producing enhanced viscosities, when used either alone or in combination with a cationic polymer and distributed in a solvent.

Common comonomers are those that place carboxylic, sulfonate, phosphite, polyethylene glycol, or hydrophobic groups along the backbone. They include maleic anhydride (subsequently hydrolyzed), sodium 2-acrylamido tert-butylsulfonic acid (Na-ATBS), sodium styrene sulfonate, l-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl sulfonate, l-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl phosphite, vinyl phosphonic acid, vinyl acrylate, polyethoxy acrylate, ethyl acrylate, methyl vinyl ether, and hydroxyl propyl acrylate [2,47-50]. 

Sulfonated styrene, maleic anhydride (SS/MA) has proved to be a popular inhibitor for calcium phosphate control in stabilized phosphate and other polyphosphate programs. As such, it competes with other calcium phosphate control technologies, such as acrylic acid, hydroxypropyl acrylate copolymer (AA/HPA) and acrylic acid, 2-acrylimido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AA/AMPS, or sometimes known as AA/SA), and acrylic acid, sodium 3-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropane sulfonate copolymer (AA/COPS).
