Alkyltrimethyl ammonium salts

Recently, mesoporous sieve-materials such as MCM-41 and FSM-16 have been synthesized by using different micelle surfactant templates such as alkyltrimethyl ammonium salts. - " These materials consist of ordered mesoporous channels of 20 100 A diameter, which are much larger than those in the conventional zeolites such as ZSM-5, AlPO-5, and NaY, as depicted in Fig. 2. They are potential hosts for the inclusion of organometallic complexes and nanoparticles that will align with the ordered channels of the mesoporous materials and are accessible to larger substrates in the catalytic reactions. 

The water solubility of quaternaries primarily depends on the nature of R substituents (hydrophobic chain lengths, polarity, etc.). Quaternaries carrying two or more long hydro-phobic chains have very poor water solubility. On the other hand, iST-alkyltrimethyl ammonium salts and short-chain dialkyl or alkyl/aryl (e.g., benzylalkyl) dimethyl ammonium salts often show much better solubility. 

Wfith the exception of JV-alkyltrimethyl ammonium salts, quaternary sxirfactants usually show poor detergency, wetting, and emulsifying capacities. Quaternaries are generally not compatible with anionics because of the formation of a water-insoluble complex. 

Biocidal applications. The use of quaternary ammonium salts in disinfecting systems for household and industrial cleaners has been known for many years [95, 96]. Alkyl-benzyldimethyl quaternaries, alkyltrimethyl quaternaries, and dialkyldimethyl quaternaries are the more commonly used biocidal quaternary ammonium salts [16]. Recently, dialkyldimethyl quaternary ammonium salts have received renewed attention as potential wood preservatives to replace the heavy metal types [97]. Metal-free wood preservative formulations containing dialkyldimethyl ammonium salts with non-halide anions, such as carboxylates, borates, and carbonates, have been developed [98, 99].
