Styrene is manufactured by alkylating benzene with ethene followed by dehydrogenation, or from petroleum reformate coproduction with propylene oxide. Styrene is used almost exclusively for the manufacture of polymers, of which the most important are polystyrene, ABS plastics and styrene-butadiene rubber.
