Alkyl fluorides synthesis carboxylic acids

Notable examples of general synthetic procedures in Volume 47 include the synthesis of aromatic aldehydes (from dichloro-methyl methyl ether), aliphatic aldehydes (from alkyl halides and trimethylamine oxide and by oxidation of alcohols using dimethyl sulfoxide, dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, and pyridinum trifluoro-acetate the latter method is particularly useful since the conditions are so mild), carbethoxycycloalkanones (from sodium hydride, diethyl carbonate, and the cycloalkanone), m-dialkylbenzenes (from the />-isomer by isomerization with hydrogen fluoride and boron trifluoride), and the deamination of amines (by conversion to the nitrosoamide and thermolysis to the ester). Other general methods are represented by the synthesis of 1 J-difluoroolefins (from sodium chlorodifluoroacetate, triphenyl phosphine, and an aldehyde or ketone), the nitration of aromatic rings (with ni-tronium tetrafluoroborate), the reductive methylation of aromatic nitro compounds (with formaldehyde and hydrogen), the synthesis of dialkyl ketones (from carboxylic acids and iron powder), and the preparation of 1-substituted cyclopropanols (from the condensation of a 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol derivative and ethyl-... [Pg.144]

Synthesis of trifluoromethylated compounds 152 has been achieved via ester-enolate [2,3]-Wittig and [3,3]-lreland-Claisen rearrangements. Perfluorocyclo-butane phosphonium ylides, e.g. 153, have been used as a masked fluoride anion source in their reactions with alcohols and carboxylic acids which lead to alkyl-and acyl-fluorides. Ylides 153 are also reported to cleave Si-C and Si-O bonds, cause dimerisation of fluoro-olefins, and also react with acid chlorides or other activated aromatic compounds under halogen exchange. ... [Pg.262]

Cesium carboxylates are especially useful in polar aprotic solvents. The enhanced reactivity of the cesium salts is due both to high solubility and to the absence of ion pairing with the anion. Acetone has been found to be a good solvent for reaction of carboxylate anions with alkyl iodides.Cesium fluoride in DMF is another useful combination. Carboxylate alkylation procedures have been particularly advantageous for preparation of hindered esters that can be relatively difficult to prepare by the acid-catalyzed esterification method (Fischer esterification) which will be discussed in Section 3.4.2. Sections F and G of Scheme 3.2 give some specific examples of ester synthesis by the reaction of carboxylic acids with diazomethane and by carboxylate alkylation. [Pg.153]

The isolation of saturated and unsaturated acetic acid derivatives in the manganese(m) acetate oxidation of olefins has been reported earlier examples of this oxidation led solely to y-lactones. A one-step synthesis of aeo-di-carboxylic acid diesters has been reported, based on Kolbe electrolysis of oxalic and malonic half-esters in the presence of olefins, and is exemplified in Scheme 2. As part of a study of insect hormone activity, Kolbe electrolysis has been utilized in the preparation of aj9-unsaturated Cj4—Cj7 acid esters with a terminal quaternary alkyl group. The utility of liquid hydrogen fluoride in the Koch carbonylation of olefins has been descried, as has a general study of this reaction. ... [Pg.128]
