Alkyl ammonium chlorides

Alkyl ammonium chloride (quaternium-15). Acts as a surfactant, disinfectant, and deodorant. 

Cationic, or positively charged, e.g. tetra-alkyl ammonium chloride (used as fabric softeners).

Unsymmetrically -substituted borazines can be prepared by the reaction of IV-substituted borazines or h-trihalogeno-N-substituted borazines and the appropriate amount of Grignard reagent (94). Borazines unsymmetrically substituted on nitrogen have been prepared by the reaction of Hthium borohydride and ammonium chloride and alkyl ammonium chlorides (105,106), and by Uthiation of B- trime thylb o r azine followed by reaction with alkyl halides (107). 

Penton and Zollinger 233.238) reported recently that this could indeed be the case. The coupling reaction of m-toluidine and N,N-dimethylaniline with 4-methoxy-benzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate in dry acetonitrile showed a number of unusual characteristics, in particular an increase in kinetic deuterium isotope effect with temperature. Predominant C-coupling occurs ( 86% for m-toluidine). but on addition of a tert.-alkyl ammonium chloride the rate became much faster, and predominantly diazoamino compounds (with loss of a methyl group from N,N-dimethylaniline) were formed. Therefore, initial attack of the diazonium ion is probably at the amine N-atom and aminoazo formation occurs via rearrangement. 

For given B and K, 0 value can be calculated. Table 2.10 lists 0 values for some common surfactants. It can be seen that 0 values for fatty acids, alkylsulfates and alkyl ammonium chlorides calculated using CMC data range from —0.6kTICR2 to 1.3fc7 /CH2.

ToFSIMS (with XPS) is currently being used to study the deposition of commercially available alkyl-ammonium chlorides (R4br.Cl ) onto polyester fabric (i.e. PET = polyethylene-terephthalate), in order to produce coatings wUch will kill bacteria on contact with the fabric surface. In addition to being functional, the coatings have to be durable and able to survive multiple washes in many cases (i.e. clothing).
