Alkenes allylic alcohols, palladium acetate

Palladium(I) intermediates have been proposed for the telomerization of butadiene with acetic acid yielding acetoxyoctadienes, and in a recent review the involvement of Pd(I) has been snggested for processes in which Pd(II) had been formerly suggested. These processes include alkene isomerization, methoxycarbonylation of alkynes to acrylic esters, and the aryloxycarbonylation of allyl alcohol. [Pg.197]

Carbonyl Compounds by Oxidation of Alcohols and Aldehydes. Salts of palladium, in particular PdCl2 in the presence of a base, catalyze the CCI4 oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes and ketones. Allylic alcohols carrying a terminal double bond are transformed to 4,4,4-trichloro ketones at 110 °C, but yield halo-hydrins at 40 °C. These can be transformed to the corresponding trichloro ketones under catalysis of palladium acetate (eq 56). The latter transformation could be useful for the formation of ketones from internal alkenes provided the halohydrin formation is regioselective. [Pg.465]

Sulfenamides can be synthesized by a metal-assisted reaction with disulfides and amines (eq 13). Conjugated dienols can be synthesized in a highly chemo-, regio-, and stereoselective manner from vinylic halides and allylic alcohols (eq 14). Silver acetate (or silver carbonate) and a catalytic amount of palladium(II) acetate in DMF are the preferred conditions. The reaction is very attractive because it requires only one functionalized alkene reactant and the addition of the vinylic group only occurs at the terminal carbon of the aUyUc alcohol. 4... [Pg.595]

When the Pd bears chiral ligands, these reactions can be enantioselective.1448 ir-Allylmo-lybdenum compounds behave similarly.1449 Because palladium compounds are expensive, a catalytic synthesis, which uses much smaller amounts of the complex, was developed. That is, a substrate such as an allylic acetate, alcohol, amine, or nitro compound1450 is treated with the nucleophile, and a catalytic amount of a palladium salt is added. The rr-allylpal-ladium complex is generated in situ. Alkene-palladium complexes (introducing the nucleophile at a vinylic rather than an allylic carbon) can also be used.1451... [Pg.468]

Backwall and coworkers have extensively studied the stereochemistry of nucleophilic additions on 7r-alkenic and ir-allylic palladium(II) complexes. They concluded that nucleophiles which preferentially undergo a trans external attack are hard bases such as amines, water, alcohols, acetate and stabilized carbanions such as /3-diketonates. In contrast, soft bases are nonstabilized carbanions such as methyl or phenyl groups and undergo a cis internal nucleophilic attack at the coordinated substrate.398,399 The pseudocyclic alkylperoxypalladation procedure occurring in the ketonization of terminal alkenes by [RCC PdOOBu1], complexes (see Section 61.3.2.2.2)42 belongs to internal cis addition processes, as well as the oxidation of complexed alkenes by coordinated nitro ligands (vide in/ra).396,397... [Pg.363]

One of the first significant advances in the chemistry of TT-allylpalladium complexes was the discovery that alkenes could be directly converted into the corresponding allyl complex by substitution into the allylic C—H bond. A variety of recipes have now been reported that can accomplish this transformation. Initially, palladium chloride17-23 or its more soluble forms, sodium or lithium tetrachloropalladate24-27 and bisacetonitrile palladium dichloride,28-30 in alcohol or aqueous acetic acid solvent were employed. The use of palladium trifluoroacetate, followed by counterion exchange with chloride, represents the mildest and most effective means available to accomplish this reaction.31... [Pg.587]

While alcohol oxidations have been the most common metal promoted reactions involving molecular oxygen, a number of other metal catalyzed oxidations of potential synthetic interest have been reported. Supported palladium catalysts are comparable to many soluble palladium catalysts in promoting the selective oxidations of alkenes and aromatics. 2-Butene was oxidized primarily to crotonic acid over Pd/C in water but methyl vinyl ketone and crotonaldehyde were also formed in significant amounts. When this oxidation was run in acetic acid the allyl acetates were the major products, particularly when a Pd/Al203 catalyst... [Pg.567]

Allylic Oxidation. The Wacker reaction and related palladium-catalyzed oxidations which proceed via nucleophilic attack on coordinated alkene have been widely practiced in industry to produce acetaldehyde, acetone, and vinyl acetate. An alternative pathway is available to alkenes in the coordination sphere of palladium(ll) complexes, which could lead to another important family of oxidation products. Insertion into the allylic C-H bond of 1-alkenes gives TT-allyl complexes which, on attack by external nucleophiles, would produce a family of allylic oxidation products including a,fi-unsaturated alcohols, carbonyl compounds, and carboxylic acids. Electron- withdrawing anionic ligands such as trifluoroacetate enhance the ability of the palladium center to insert into C-H bonds in this manner [26] (Fig. lA). Catalytic conversion of propylene to allyl acetate has been achieved in high selectivity in the presence of catalytic quantities of palladium(ll) trifluoroacetate [27]. [Pg.107]
