Alkane sulfonic acids

Sulfonic acids may be hydrolytically cleaved, using high temperatures and pressures, to drive the reaction to completion. As would be expected, each sulfonic acid has its own unique hydrolytic desulfonation temperature. Lower alkane sulfonic acids possess excellent hydrolytic stability, as compared to aromatic sulfonic acids which ate readily hydrolyzed. Flydrolytic desulfonation finds use in the separation of isomers of xylene sulfonic acids and other substituted mono-, di-, and polysulfonic acids. 

The sulfoxidation of alkanes to alkane sulfonic acids using a combination of sulfur dioxide and dioxygen and catalyzed by vanadium compounds has been reported [20]. The mechanism involves intermediacy of alkyl radicals which are trapped by sulfur dioxide and then further oxidized to the product.

The reaction mixture is circulated by the continuous addition of alkane and water. It is pumped to a separator where an aqueous phase and an upper phase of practically pure alkane are formed. In the aqueous phase, there is sulfuric acid and unreacted alkane in addition to the alkane sulfonic acid. After separation of the sulfuric acid, the alkane sulfonic acid, containing some alkane, is neutralized. The alkane is then separated by steam distillation and recycled. The final product is obtained as molten sodium alkane sulfonate and is available as either flakes or pastes.

The employed catalyst consists of a strong liquid Br0nsted acid supported, in the sense of embedded inside its pores, on a porous solid (commonly Si02). The paraffin sulfonates are produced by sulfo-oxidation of normal linear paraffins with sulfur dioxide and oxygen and catalyzed with ultraviolet or gamma radiation. The resulting alkane sulfonic acid is neutralized with NaOH. These surfactants have excellent water solubility and biodegradability. They are also compatible with many aqueous ions. 

Naphthalene can be alkylated by olefins. Alkylation of naphthalene with propylene with solid phosphoric acid, perfluorinated alkane-sulfonic acids (C10F21SO3H and Ci2F25S03H) and Nafion-H is patented. 

Kiermeier and co-workers [23] and Wildbrett and co-workers [24] have developed schemes for the measurement of the extractability of monomeric phthalate ester and C10/C20 alkane phenyl sulfonates from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) containers into milk. After leaving raw milk at 38 "C for 4 hours in contact with PVC tubing containing bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate or phenol or cresol alkanesulfonate, the respective plasticiser was determined. Schemes are described for separation and hydrolysis of the phthalic acid ester, with spectrophotometric determination of the liberated phthalic acid at 284 nm, and for the separation and saponification of the alkane sulfonic acid ester and for spectrophotometric determination at 470 nm, of the liberated phenol or cresol after coupling with diazotised nitroaniline and addition of sodium carbonate solution.
