Aliphatic carboxylic adds

Aliphatic carboxylic adds are an important and widely used class of commercial chemicals. The commertial uses of carboxylic acids include synthetic intermediates, lubricants, catalysts, and preservatives, to name just a few. Some carboxylic adds cause liver (hepato) toxicity, most notably valproic add (2-propylpentanoic add) (12), and 2-ethylhexanoic add, (13). Although relatively few carboxylic adds cause liver toxicity, when it does occur it can be severe [49]. 

Indirect detection is used to determine simple ions such as chloride, sulfate, sodium, and potassium. The technique is also applicable to aliphatic amines, aliphatic carboxylic adds, and simple sugars [8].

The carbonyl stretching frequency of aliphatic carboxylic adds in dilute solution is located near 1770 cm . This frequency is much higher than the carbonyl frequency of these substances when measured neat ( 1720 cm ). How much the retention of an analyte changes with pH depends both on the degree of ionization as well as on structural parameters. Sulfonic adds are very acidic. Benzenesulfonic acid has a pJQ of 0.7. The pK values of aliphatic sulfonic acids are higher. Aliphatic carboxylic adds commonly have pJQ values around 4.5 to 5. Aromatic carboxylic acids, on the other hand, are more addic. Sulfonamides are weakly acidic. The pK, values of phenols can be found in the mildly alkaline pH range (phenol pfC, = 9.99) and depend strongly on the substituents on the aromatic ring.
