ChemConnections (ChemLinks Coalition, 2000) is a modular course for undergraduate begiimers. Modules can be selected from a bank and used independently of one another, if necessary in conjunction with traditional modules. For example, Earth, Fire and Air uses a detailed study of car airbag systems as a context to develop an extensive range of foundation chemistry, including the gas laws, the kinetic theory and chemical calculations. Later in this chapter we describe research which has compared this approach with a traditional approach to teaching these topics.
