Switching from conventional to GM crops expressing agronomic traits likely affects pesticide usage, because these traits serve to inqrrove yields, insect pest control, and weed management. Herbicide tolerance traits, for example, are linked to the use of a specific herbicide, which may substitute for alternative herbicides that are used for weed management in conventional crops. Shifts in pesticide usage by adoption of GM crops will likely have an impact on the environment, but data in this respect are scarcely available and sometimes even contradictory. 

The varieties, developed by USDA and seed companies, have already shown good yield and other agronomic traits. NuSun oil production was nearly 171,000 tonnes in the crop year of 2001. This volume was reached only four years after the first commercial crushing in 1998. The oil has all the appeal of traditional sunflower oil, while at the same time it is more stable, does not require hydrogenation for industrial frying application, and will be sold as commodity oil. A worldwide expansion of the NuSun variety could perhaps provide the boost that the sunflower oil industry needs today. 

The World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a protocol on how to apply this principle to foods or food components from plants derived by modem biotechnology (10). The determination of "substantial equivalence" is based on a molecular characterization on the DNA level it further includes the evaluation of agronomic traits, and it concludes with a chemical characterization of the new food or food component. The major focus of this chemical analysis is on namrally occurring toxicants and critical nutrients.
