2 Aging Effect Critical in Space-Based Batteries 

Large-scale accelerated life testing of space-based batteries, including Ni-Hj, Ni-Cd, and Ni-HM batteries, is necessary to achieve reliable data on aging effects. Simulations, both real-time and accelerated life-cycle testing data must be achieved on GEO and LEO communications systems. These data will identify early detection of aging effects in the electrochemical cells deployed in the space-based batteries. In brief, this type of information will form the basis for more robust and efficient batteries with high cycle life. Test results on specific batteries as a function of various pertinent parameters are summarized in Table 2.14.
