The 2000 National Household Survey on Dmg Abuse, a SAMHSA project, found that 8.9% of youths aged 12 to 17—about 2.1 million adolescents—had used inhalants at some time in their lives. In this same age group, 3.9% had used glue, shoe polish, or toluene and 3.3% reported using gasoline or lighter fluid. [Pg.261]

Glue sniffing exploded in Singapore between 1980 and 1991. The Central Narcotics Bureau of Singapore reported 24 cases of inhalent abuse in 1980. In 1985 the reported cases rose to 1,005. Recently, in South America, researchers found that almost a quarter of children of low-income families in Sao Paulo, Brazil, had inhaled a volatile substance at some time in their lives, and 4.9% had done so within the previous month. In Mexico, researchers who conducted a survey of street children found that 12% had started using glue regularly by the age of nine. [Pg.261]

Seven children aged from 9 to 13 years, with an acute encephalopathy due to toluene intoxication from glue-sniffing were found to have blood-toluene concentrations of 0.8 to 7.7 pg/g (mean 2.3) (M. D. King et al., Br. med. J., 1981,283, 663-665). [Pg.1033]

Figure 1.1 Inhalants are the fourth most popular drug of abuse among high-school students. In 2000, more than 2 million Americans aged 12 to 17 had used inhalants at least once in their lifetime. In this graph, the inhalants are grouped by type. Volatile solvents were the most popular type of inhalant used, with 3.9% of individuals inhaling glue, shoe polish, or toluene. Zinc oxides is mainly used in the rubber industry in which it serves as an activator in the vulcanization process. Its low hardness and high compatibility with polymers are important for its utilization in chemical materials. In its utilization in paints, its tendency to form zinc soaps, which hinder the attack of coatings by fungus and improve the aging resi.stance (UV-absorption), is important. Further application fields for zinc oxide are in copier paper, glues, pharmaceutical products, cosmetic products and dental cements. [Pg.561]

The viscosity of gelatin and glue is affected by the acidity of the material, by the age of the solution, and by other factors. A method of testing glues suggested by Lenk consists in measuring the time of gelatinisation in minutes at fH 7 0—7>5. He proposes the... [Pg.459]

We have made every effort to make this the best liook possible. Our paper is opaque, with minimal show-through it will not discolor or become brittle with age. Pages are sewn in signatures, in the method traditionally used for the 1>est books, and will not drop out, as often happens with pa >erl>acks held togethet with glue. Hooks open flat for easy reference. The binding will not crack or split. This is a permanent book. [Pg.300]
