Since Harman s famous work [440] on free radical theory of aging in 1956, numerous studies have been dedicated to the development of his theory, which were reviewed by many authors (see, for example, early reviews, Refs. [441-444]). There is of course no necessity and possibility to discuss these reviews, which have been perfectly considered by their authors. [Pg.945]

In-depth studies of the accelerated aging syndromes, especially Down s syndrome, will further clarify the relationship between the genomic and free radical theories. [Pg.49]

Birds are an ideal test case for the hypothesis that it is the rate of free-radical production, rather than some other facet of metabolism, that is linked to longevity. If lifespan is linked to metabolism in a general sense, then we would expect free-radical production to vary with metabolic rate in all cases, as indeed it does in most mammals. On the other hand, if free radicals are responsible for ageing, the fact that birds consume so much oxygen can only mean that they have a very efficient mechanism for cutting down free-radical production. Put another way, if the free-radical theory is correct, birds must produce fewer free radicals than mammals, even though they consume far more oxygen. [Pg.255]

Partly because cancer incidence is strongly correlated with age, many scientists also attribute normal aging to the accumulation of unrepaired mutagenic DNA lesions, and oxidative stress is implicated in what has been called the "free radical theory of aging."... [Pg.1747]
