If CO or CO2 is present, the air leak is probably in the hot part of the vacuum tower or the transfer line. Look for a leak in the ejector or vacuum-tower overhead piping if oxygen is present in the tail gas. On several units, leaks in the seal leg piping have proven troublesome. A sketch of a single-stage ejector system (Fig. 13-6) shows the iocation of the seal leg piping. Use aerosol shave cream to test for vacuum leaks. When all else fails, pressure the tower to 3-5 psig. Aerosol shaving cream typically contains soap, usually as the triethanolamine salt rather than the sodium salt. Other surfactants, such as AS and AES may be present, as well as a diol or polyol like propylene glycol or sorbitol. Water, fragrance, and isobutane and perhaps propane propellant are also present. In most markets, the chief ingredients are listed on the label. [Pg.607]

Emulsions. Aerosol emulsions (qv) may be oil in water (o/w), such as shaving creams, or water in oil (w/o), such as air fresheners and pohshes. These aerosols consist of active ingredients, an aqueous or nonaqueous vehicle, a surfactant, and a propellant, and can be emitted as a foam or as a spray. [Pg.345]

Chlorofluorocarbon Alternatives. There still is no completely satisfactory propellant for use in the aerosol method of foam production. The escape of Freons into the atmosphere is thought to contribute to the destruction of the ozone layer of the Earth s atmosphere. For this reason, Freons are no longer used in aerosol cans for shaving cream, hair spray, and other products, and they have been phased out of refrigeration systems. [Pg.544]

A compressed gas used to expel the contents of containers in the form of aerosols. Chlorofluorocarbons were once widely used because of their nonflammability. The strong possibility that they contribute to depletion of the ozone layer of the upper atmosphere has resulted in prohibition of their use for this purpose. Other propellants used are hydrocarbon gases, such as butane and propane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide. Products in aerosol cans are widely used in our society. We use hairsprays, mouth sprays, shaving cream, whipped cream, spray paint, spray cleaners, and many others. As in the case of most consumer products, chemistry plays an important role in making aerosol products work. [Pg.512]

Another type of wet-shaving preparation is the non-aerosol type, which is now much less popular than the aerosol type. Two types may be distinguished, namely the brushless and lather shave creams. These formulations are still marketed, although they are much less popular than the aerosol type systems. The brushless shaving cream is an O/W emulsion with high concentrations of oil and soap. The thick film of lubricant oil provides emolliency and protection to the skin surface. [Pg.421]

Despite the replacement of soap by synthetic detergents, products for wet shaving continue to be based on soap. Shaving creams and soaps are available as solids, that is, bars creams, generally in tubes or aerosols. Solids are essentially pme soaps applied to the face as foams with a brush. Shaving creams may be nonlathering (emulsion) and rarely consist entirely of lubricating hpids. [Pg.36]
