Advanced Filter

A different concept is the idea of manufacturing at point of use rather than transporting materials. A simple and familiar example is the office water cooler. The majority that you see around use large bottles of water. These need to be transported and stored and the empty bottles recycled. More than 600 kT of bottled water were imported into the UK in 1999, creating a significant transport impact. The alternative is to chill and filter mains water on-site. The water needs to be filtered and purified to meet consumer perceptions and expectations. These systems use a mixture of purification techniques including advanced filters, UV-disinfection and silver-treated surfaces to give users the confidence they require. 

A database such as Microsoft Access would be able to do this Boolean search with ease. The Filter by Form, the Filter by Selection, and the Advanced filter/sort function allow the user to specify density >0.6 AND <0.7 or bp >-40 AND <0. This search yields three results ... 

The market for higher-sulfur coal is on the rise, since advanced filtering units called scrubbers are in use by a growing number of electric generating companies. Scrubbers are multistory facilities that are built adjacent to smokestacks. They capture sulfur as the coal exhaust billows through the smokestack and sequester it for storage before it can be cleaned. 

Through the sampling head, the pump unit feeds air to the detection head which contains a sequentially advanced filter cartridge that captures alpha and beta emitters for detection. The detection type is gross counting for beta, gamma and spectrometry for alpha particulates using dual passivated silicon detectors. 

To use a data filter on molecular weight (column B), click the arrow button in that column. Excel displays a drop-down list of all values in the column, plus "Custom...". To display all records that match one of the values in the selected field, you can select it from the list. To perform other logical comparisons, choose Custom... to display the Advanced Filter dialog box (Figure 6-6). 

You can add a second data filter on data in the same field using the Advanced Filter dialog box. The second filter can be either an And filter (e.g., samples with molecular weight greater than 12 kD and less than 15 kD) or an Or filter. 

You can use Advanced Filter... from the Filter... submenu to display only records that match selection criteria, or to write them to another location in the worksheet. 

Now choose Advanced Filter... from the Filter... submenu of the Data menu. Excel will display the Advanced Filter dialog box (Figure 6-10). If you selected a cell within the list, the reference to the list will appear in the List Range box. If you had assigned the name Criteria to the criteria table, the reference will appear in the Criteria Range box.
