The solution contains equilibrium concentrations of potassium benzoate, benzoic acid, and potassium hydroxide. Of these, the benzoic acid is most strongly adsorbed and when thus removed, further hydrolysis occurs. The increase in the concentration of potassium hydroxide causes the solution to become more alkaline.
