Hot setting adhesives

Adhesive, hot-setting n. An adhesive that requires a temperature at or above 100°C (212°F) to set the adhesive. 

Adhesive, Cold-Setting n An adhesive that sets at temperatures below 20°C (68°F) (See also Adhesive, Hot-Setting Adhesive, InterMediate Temperature Setting and Adhesive, Room Temperature Setting). 

Urea resin adhesives, by the use of the proper hardener, may be set either by heat or at room temperature. For room temperature curing, the hardener may be ammonium chloride, together with basic materials like calcium phosphate to neutralize excess acid that might damage the wood. Cold set or room temperature set adhesives are those that set satisfactorily at 20 —30°C, whereas a hot set adhesive generally means one that is set above 99 °C. 

Hot-melt adhesives Hot-melt adhesives are applied to the adherends in a fused form and set by cooling. Their open assembly time is very short, thus adherends have to be fixed immediately after adhesive application. 

Lucalen . [BASF AG] Ethylene copolymers with polar groups adhesive agent for composites, laminating, profiles, seals, hot-setting adhesives. 

Hot-setting phenolic adhesives are processed for up to 15 minutes at 100-150°C and at 0.7-1.7 MPa bonding pressure. The film form is processed for up to 15 minutes at 120-150°C and at 0.7-1.4 MPa. This type of phenolic is resistant to weather, boiling water, and biodeterioration. It has superior temperature stability to that of the acid-catalyzed form. Applications of this adhesive include fabrication of exterior-grade weather- and boil-proof plywood and for bonding glass to metal for electric light bulbs. ... 

We will consider a torsional load on a co-axial joint, with an overlap of 25 nun using a single part hot setting epoxy adhesive. The inner tube external diameter is 25 mm and both tubes are 1.5 mm thick steel. A torsional load of 100 Nm and a glue line of 0.05 mm gives a stress distribution as shown in Fig. 30.
