Adhesion specialists often need to determine whether the two materials they are trying to bond are well bonded. The practice of modifying epoxy resins with liquid polysulphides may not be new but the method of doing so has advanced significantly in recent years to the extent that these systems are being given serious consideration in the design of specialist coatings, primers, adhesives and encap-sulants (Morton International, undated a Rees and Wilford, 1994 Rees et al., 1994). 

In February 1997, Unilever resolved to sell subsidiaries it had acquired over the years to provide materials used in the production of its end-products. The package comprised four units Crosfields, a competitor purchased in 1919 that became a specialist in silicon- and aluminum-based compounds National Starch, a turn-of-the-century U.S. merger, which, when bought in 1978, was the world s largest producer of industrial adhesives and two Dutch acquisitions, Unichema, the world s leader in oleo chemicals, and Quest, a leading fragrance and food-ingredient supplier. Combined label/leaflet. Delivered as a thick pressure sensitive label (either reel-fed or block cut), containing a fold-out portion which is the leaflet itself. Applied as one would apply a pressure sensitive label. These have now been around for a number of years. As far as can be ascertained, at least six patents have been taken out in this field. Recently there has been more use of multi-ply construction of these types of label, often using dissimilar materials with rather specialist adhesive systems. Probably the best known are Fix-a-Form from Denny, Peel n Reseal booklet labels, Multipeel, a peel off promotional leaflet or sticker, Dri-peel, Incore and the Double-Dri system. Leaflets use high-opacity (80%+EEL) lightweight (40-70 g/m2) coated or uncoated papers. 

The volume is divided into four main sections, the first being an introductory overview. The remaining three sections are concerned with (1) fundamental aspects, (2) adhesive classes, and (3) some fields in which application of adhesives is very extensive. All the contributors are known specialists in their fields who practice their specialties on a daily basis. Their chapters are the results of considerable knowledge and experience in their particular niches.

It is evident from this brief overview of adhesion technology, nature, and science that many different specialists have an interest in the definition of what adhesion is, in the observing and measurement of the adhesive forces, in the chemical modification of surfaces to control adhesiveness, in improving adhesion so that aircraft do not fall apart, and in reducing adhesion so that cars do not seize up. In other words, adhesion is an interdisciplinary subject. Indeed, it connects many different subjects because of its common function and value.
