Adhesive assembly

In the automated lay-up system, each layer of veneer (with exception of the top surface veneer) passes under an automatic adhesive appHcation system. This may be a spray appHcation, a curtain coater, or an extmder, each of which is designed to apply a uniform adhesive spread on the upper face of each veneer. After all except the top veneer have been spread with adhesive and laid together, the top veneer is added. The me of the veneer—adhesive assembly at this point should be about 8%. 

A variety of applications exist for liquid, 100% solid adhesives, (An adhesive is considered 100% solid if there is no solvent in the adhesive.) Some of the largest uses include structural wood adhesives and adhesives used for the transportation industry, such as windshield adhesives and those used for bonding composite sidewalls of a recreational vehicle (RV). Structural wood adhesives are often made of a polymeric MDI with functionality of approximately 2.7 or higher. Rigid assemblies often utilize polymeric MDI, whereas flexible adhesive assemblies will more often utilize pure MDI, a solid waxy material that melts at around 37°C, or a modified MDI , i.e., MDI that has been modified to make it a liquid at room temperature. Prepolymers are made with ratios of anywhere from NCO/OH = 1.6 to 3.0 or higher.

Inasmuch as VASP appears to be localized to focal adhesions in intact platelets, the interesting possibility exists that PKG regulates focal adhesion assembly. In a report by Murphy-Ullrich and coworkers (1994), selective inhibitors of PKG, but not PKA or protein kinase C, inhibited thrombospondin-evoked focal adhesion disassembly, suggesting that PKG mediates thrombospondin action. This would be a new role for PKG in regulating cellular shape and motility. The role of VASP in this process is currently unknown, but the availability of cDNA probes for controlling expression of this unique protein may provide answers.

A variety of acrylic copolymers are prepared by emulsion polymerization. A number of acrylic adhesives that are called reactive adhesives, modified acrylics, second-generation acrylics, or reactive-fluid adhesives have become available over the years. These formulations polymerize in the glue line and become an integral part of an adhesive assembly. 

Bond strength— The unit load (force) supplied in tension, compression, flexure, peel, impact, cleavage, or shear, required to break an adhesive assembly, with failure occurring in or near the plane of the bond (the interface). The term adherence (q.v.) is frequently used in place of bond sttraigth. 

Postcure, v—To expose an adhesive assembly to an additional cure, following the initio cure, for the purpose of modifying specific properties.
