More recently adenosine has been shown to be toxic to fibroblasts and lymphocytoid lines in culture (G6). The toxicity is dependent upon conversion of adenosine to adenylic acid (AMP) since a line devoid of adenosine kinase activity is much less susceptible to adenosine toxicity (II).

A nucleoside in which a hydroxyl group of one of the sugar moieties is esterified with a phosphoric acid is called a nucleotide. For example, placing a phosphate at the 5 -position of adenosine and guanosine, each possessing purine base, generates nucleotides, and these are named 5 -adenylic acid (AMP) and 5 -guanylic acid (GMP), respectively, and are utilized biochemically in the formation of ribonucleic acid (RNA). 

The RNA mononucleotide unit containing adenine is adenosine-5 -monophosphate (adenylic acid) (AMP). This compound is described in Chapter 11.3 and is the hydrolysis product from adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
