ADAM program

The second bullet involves crimes committed by people under the influence of drugs. The only data available comes from the ADAM program that was conducted by the National Institute of Justice. This program was discussed under Target 11, but, to reiterate, the reports on the ADAM program are not consistent in form and content, which makes comparisons over time difficult. In the report regarding 1998 arrestees, 15 of 35 sites had about two-thirds of adult arrestees test positive for at least one ilhcit drug. In 2003, 25 of the 35 sites reported two-thirds of male adult arrestees tested positive. These data would not be consistent... 

Another new and much used variant is a procedure called orientation imaging microscopy (Adams ci al. 199.5) patterns created by electrons back-scattered from a grain are automatically interpreted by a computer program, then the grain examined is automatically changed, and finally the orientations so determined are used to create an image of the polycrystal with the grain boundaries colour- or thickness-... 

During World War I. Haber was in charge of the German poison gas program. In April of 1915. the Germans used chlorine for the first time on the Western front, causing 5000 fatalities. Haber s wife. Clara, was aghast she pleaded with her husband to forsake poison gas. When he adamantly refused to do so. she committed suicide. 

I recently included much of this personal background in the Roger Adams Award Address on which this chapter is largely based. However, space limitations made it impossible to include this personal background in the present chapter. Consequently, I decided to review our research program in the borane area over the past 35 years with emphasis on the factors which led us to each new development. 

Speed helped organize, prior to the war years, a rubber program on the synthesis of rubber for the National Defense Research Committee under Adams, which was eventually responsible for the production of rubber during the war. He was also drafted and helped on a research program for the Committee on Medical Research dealing with malaria research. 

One possibility is to run simulated annealing refinement in torsion angle space as implemented in CNS (Briinger et ah, 1998). As this is one of the most powerful programs in terms of radius of convergence, it is especially useful to look for the decrease of the free-R-factor (Adams et al., 1999), but this is a rather cpu-intensive task if several possible solutions are to be tested. 

The Bcl-2 protein is a member of a protein family involved in regulation of the apoptotic program in mammalian cells (review Reed, 1997 Adams and Cory, 1998). At present, at least 15 members are known of the Bcl-2 family, which can have a negative or a positive effect on initiation of the apoptotic program. All Bcl-2 family members have at least one copy of a so-called BH motif (BH, Bcl-2 homolog), of which there are four types (BHl - BH4).

Inventory Estimates. The inventory estimates described in detail in this section are based on the emission rate data reported by Lamb et al. (1). In order to obtain an uncertainty estimate, these inventory results are compared with estimates based upon data reported by Goldan et al. (21) and Adams et al. (2). The SURE emissions data (2) referred to in the following text have been corrected using the results of recovery efficiency studies conducted by S. Farwell (personal communication, 1985) using a GC system identical to that used during the SURE program. 

Meanwhile, Arnold Beckman (b.1900), hitherto a manufacturer of electronic pH meters, had joined forces with Robert Brattain - the brother of Walter Brattain of transistor fame - at Shell Research, with the encouragement of the U. S. Government s Rubber Reserve Company. Beckman s first commercial infrared spectrometer, the IR-1, was developed in 1942 and was used by the wartime synthetic rubber research program. However, the classified nature of this and similar work meant that Beckman spectrometers were not generally available until 1945, when the IR-2 was marketed.
