Acidic environment suppresses

As pointed out by Dixon and colleagues if a direct role for refluxed bile derivatives in carcinogenesis becomes accepted, therapy aimed principally at acid reduction, cannot be expected to eliminate cancer risk in Barrett s oesophagus. However, not only is acid suppression likely to be ineffective in preventing bile acid-driven carcinogenesis, it could also actually promote cancer development by providing a less acidic environment favouring bile acid activity. [Pg.116]

As a weak base (pKa = 3.9), pantoprazole is highly ionized at low pH and readily accumulates in the highly acidic canalicular lumen of the stimulated parietal cell. In this acidic environment, pantoprazole is rapidly converted to the active species, a cationic cyclic sulfonamide, which binds covalently to cysteine residues on the luminal (acidic) surface of H+, K+-ATPase to form a mixed disulphide, thereby causing irreversible inhibition of gastric proton pump function. As H+, K+-ATPase represents the final step in the secretary process, inhibition of this enzyme suppresses gastric acid secretion regardless of the primary stimulus [1],... [Pg.257]

Based on these observations, several groups have repeated such experiments and have qualitatively confirmed that pitting especially was suppressed, compared to uncoated passive stainless steel in an acid environment [108]. [Pg.567]

These relationships are shown in Figure 17. Very strong bases and very strong acids both exist in the ionized form only, over the pH range studied. In weak acids, low pH of the environment suppresses ionization. Plotting pH (= —log [H ]) [A ]... [Pg.396]

In rats, intracerebroventricular administration of NPY has been associated with an attenuation in ambulation, grooming, and defecation associated with a novel or open-field environment (B. E. Leonard and Song 1994]. ffow-ever, in an elevated plus-maze, this group reported that NPY effects were negligible. NPY-associated behavioral changes were also accompanied by changes in homovanillic acid and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid and by the suppression of lymphocyte proliferation. Further evidence of anxiolytic effects... [Pg.400]

Polarity of Environment. A strongly hydrophobic environment inhibits solvation and hence stabilization of the ionic conjugate bases in (II) and (III). Ionization is thus suppressed in these cases, and the pKa values increase. On the other hand, the pA"a of the cationic acid (I) is expected to decrease, hence the cationic acid becomes more acidic, since the resulting conjugate base is uncharged. [Pg.416]
