For commercial appHcation, catalyst activity is only one of the factors to be considered. Equally important is catalyst life, but Htde has been pubHshed on this aspect. Partly because of entrainment losses and partly through loss of acid as volatile triethyl phosphate, the catalyst loses activity unless compensating steps are taken. This decline in activity can be counteracted by the periodic or continuous addition of phosphoric acid to the catalyst during use, a fact that seems to have been disclosed as early as 1940 (94). A catalyst subjected periodically to acid addition could remain in service indefinitely, according to a report by Shell (91). A later Shell patent (85) states that complete reimpregnation with acid is required every 200 mn-days. [Pg.405]

Automated analyzers may be used for continuous monitoring of ambient poUutants and EPA has developed continuous procedures (23) as alternatives to the referenced methods. Eor source sampling, EPA has specified extractive sampling trains and analytical methods for poUutants such as SO2 and SO [7446-11-9] sulfuric acid [7664-93-9] mists, NO, mercury [7439-97-6], beryUium [7440-41-7], vinyl chloride, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Some EPA New Source Performance Standards requite continuous monitors on specified sources. [Pg.384]

Deodorization can be carried out ki batch, continuous, or semicontkiuous systems. Figure 4 shows a typical design for a semicontkiuous deodorizer. The heated ok is passed through a series of trays under vacuum. Steam is passed through the ok through a steam sparge ki the bottom of the tray. Volatiles are carried through the headspace and condensed. In addition to fatty acids and compounds responsible for odor, some tocopherols and sterols are also distilled kito the condensate. The amount of tocopherols distilled depends on deodorization temperature and vacuum. [Pg.127]

Many methods for the conversion of acid copolymers to ionomers have been described by Du Pont (27,28). The chemistry involved is simple when cations such as sodium or potassium are involved, but conditions must be controlled to obtain uniform products. Solutions of sodium hydroxide or methoxide can be fed to the acid copolymer melt, using a high shear device such as a two-roU mill to achieve uniformity. AH volatile by-products are easily removed during the conversion, which is mn at about 150°C. A continuous process has been described, using two extmders, the first designed to plasticate the feed polymer and mix it rapidly with the metal compound, eg, zinc oxide, at 160°C (28). Acetic acid is pumped into the melt to function as an activator. Volatiles are removed in an extraction-extmder which follows the reactor-extmder, and the anhydrous melt emerges through a die-plate as strands which are cut into pellets. [Pg.408]

Novolak Resins. In a conventional novolak process, molten phenol is placed into the reactor, foHowed by a precise amount of acid catalyst. The formaldehyde solution is added at a temperature near 90°C and a formaldehyde-to-phenol molar ratio of 0.75 1 to 0.85 1. For safety reasons, slow continuous or stepwise addition of formaldehyde is preferred over adding the entire charge at once. Reaction enthalpy has been reported to be above 80 kj /mol (19 kcal/mol) (29,30). The heat of reaction is removed by refluxing the water combined with the formaldehyde or by using a small amount of a volatile solvent such as toluene. Toluene and xylene are used for azeotropic distillation. FoHowing decantation, the toluene or xylene is returned to the reactor. [Pg.297]

The reaction is completed after 6—8 h at 95°C volatiles, water, and some free phenol are removed by vacuum stripping up to 140—170°C. For resins requiring phenol in only trace amounts, such as epoxy hardeners, steam distillation or steam stripping may be used. Both water and free phenol affect the cure and final resin properties, which are monitored in routine quaHty control testing by gc. OxaHc acid (1—2 parts per 100 parts phenol) does not require neutralization because it decomposes to CO, CO2, and water furthermore, it produces milder reactions and low color. Sulfuric and sulfonic acids are strong catalysts and require neutralization with lime 0.1 parts of sulfuric acid per 100 parts of phenol are used. Reliable analytical methods are available for determination of many volatile nitrosamines at concentrations of 0.1 to 10 ppb in a variety of environmental and biological samples. Most methods employ distillation, extraction, an optional cleanup step, concentration, and final separation by gas chromatography (GC). Use of the highly specific Thermal Energy Analyzer (TEA) as a GC detector affords simplification of sample handling and cleanup without sacrifice of selectivity or sensitivity. Mass spectrometry (MS) is usually employed to confirm the identity of nitrosamines. Utilization of the mass spectrometer s capability to provide quantitative data affords additional confirmatory evidence and quantitative confirmation should be a required criterion of environmental sample analysis. Artifactual formation of nitrosamines continues to be a problem, especially at low levels (0.1 to 1 ppb), and precautions must be taken, such as addition of sulfamic acid or other nitrosation inhibitors. The efficacy of measures for prevention of artifactual nitrosamine formation should be evaluated in each type of sample examined. [Pg.331]
