Acidity acetone

If one heats acetone and pyrrole in the presence of catalytic amounts of acid, so-called acetone pyrrole is formed in over 80%i yield. This colorless, macrocyclic compound contains four pyrrole units which are connected by dimethylmethylene bridges, ft is formed by electrophilic-a-substitution of pyrrole by acetone, acid-catalyzed oligomerization, and spontaneous. 

Similarly, (A )-( )-3-(2-methoxymethyl-l-pyrrolidinyl)-l-phenylpropene118 121, after lithia-tion and addition of acetone, acidic hydrolysis and oxidation of the intermediate lactol, gives (5)-dihydro-5,5-dimethyl-4-phenyl-2(3/f)-furanone with 98% ee and 54% overall yield. Thus, these sequences constitute asymmetric homoaldol addition. 

In alluvial soil, there was no great difference in the extraction efficiencies among the various solvent combinations tested, with acetone, acidic acetone or alkaline acetone, for reflux extraction. 

A number of solvent mixtures were studied by Burrows, Grylls and Harrison.123 These included a series of acetone-acid-water mixtures, and methanol-ammonium hydroxide. The advantages of these solvents are rapid flow of solvent and higher RF values than may be obtained with the solvents of Hanes and Isherwood. Cohen and Scott124 used an ethanol-boric acid solvent to take advantage of the selectivity of borate-complex formation. 

Properties Colorless, transparent, very hygroscopic, crystalline mass. Fumes slightly in air. D 3.14, bp 223.6C, mp 73.2C. Soluble in alcohol, acetone, acids. With water forms antimony oxychloride.
