Ethyl benzoylacetate has been prepared by the condensation (by means of sodium ethylate) of ethyl acetate with ethyl benzoate,1 acetophenone with ethyl carbonate,2 and acetophenone with ethyl oxalate, with subsequent heating 3 by treatment of ethyl phenylpropiolate4 or a-bromocinnamic acid 5 with concentrated sulfuric acid, and of ethyl diazoacetate with benzalde-hyde 6 by the condensation of benzene with the monoethyl ester of malonyl monoacid chloride and aluminum chloride,7 of benzoyl chloride with the product of the reaction of magnesium and ethyl chloroacetate in ether,8 of alcohol on benzoylacetimino ethyl... 

The acylation of formamidoxime should lead to oxadiazoles unsubstituted in the 3-position. While benzoylation with benzoyl chloride is reported to give dibenzhydroxamic acid 45), 0-acylated formamidoxime could be prepared in good yields with acetic anhydride, the mixed anhydride of acetic and ethyl carbonic acid, benzoic anhydride and benzoyl azide. The cyclization of these esters of formamidoxime into 5-substituted oxadiazoles has been accomplished by heating in an aqueous medium. 

Highest yields are obtained when the reaction is carried out in boiling toluene until all water and ethanol are eliminated by azeotropic distillation. Other /S-ketocarboxylic esters such as ethyl benzoyl acetate, o-methoxybenzoyl acetate and ethyl acetonedicarboxylate react similarly with aromatic amidoximes (50). 

Catalytic tests were performed in a glass vessel equipped with a stirrer motor. Two monoliths (diameter 4.3 cm, length 4 cm) were mounted in plane on the stirrer axis. The total reaction volume was 2.5 1. Lipase was assayed in the acylation of vinyl acetate with butanol in toluene. Initial reaction rate was followed by GC analysis. Immobilized trypsin was used in the hydrolysis of N-benzoyl-l-arginine ethyl ester (BAEE) in a 0.01 M phosphate buffer pH 8 at 308 K. The reaction was followed by UV-VIS at 253 nm, and reaction rate was calculated in the mass transfer limited situation.
