Colour photography

In the black and white photographic process, the dark areas result from the presence of reduced metallic silver, Ag. In the colour process metallic Ag is used to synthesize a dye of the appropriate colour, and all the silver is removed from the film. The photochemical reaction is therefore the same as in the black and white process, namely photoinduced electron transfer within the AgBr grains.

It is used for hair dyeing, as a rubber accelerator and as a photographic developer. Derivatives are extensively used as developers in colour photography. 

Methyl-l-phenyl-3-pyrazolin-5-one gives a green-black dye (736) with 4-nitroso- or 4-amino-dimethylaniline and silver chlorides in the presence of light, a process of great importance in colour photography (B-76MI40403).
