This route relies on 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions a series of dihydropyrrolizines 213 were synthesized by heating the proline derivatives 211 with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) at 130-140 °C in the presence of acetic anhydride. Reaction between 211 and AczO provides the mesoionic oxazalone intermediate 212 which adds to dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, giving a cycloadduct, which undergoes spontaneous decarboxylation leading to 213 (Scheme 50) <1998JME4744, 1977JME812>. 

The efficient At-nitration of secondary amines has been achieved by transfer nitration with 4-chloro-5-methoxy-2-nitropyridazin-3-one, a reagent prepared from the nitration of the parent 4-chloro-5-methoxypyridazin-3-one with copper nitrate trihydrate in acetic anhydride. Reactions have been conducted in methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, acetonitrile and diethyl ether where yields of secondary nitramine are generally high. Homopiperazine is selectively nitrated to At-nitrohomopiperazine or At, At -dinitrohomopiperazine depending on the reaction stoichiometry. At-Nitration of primary amines or aromatic secondary amines is not achievable with this reagent. 

The use of activated anthranihc acid derivatives facUitates the preparation of the amides in those cases where the amines are either umeactive or difficult to obtain. Thus, reaction of (87-1) with phosgene gives the reactive the isatoic anhydride (89-1). Condensation of that with ortho-toluidine leads to the acylation product (89-2) formed with a simultaneous loss of carbon dioxide. This is then converted to the quinazolone (89-3) by heating with acetic anhydride. Reaction with sodium borohydride in the presence of aluminum chloride selectively reduces the double bond to yield the diuretic agent metolazone (89-4) [99]. 

Reaction of 164 with acetic anhydride, reaction of isatin with L-pipecolic acid, or reaction of pyrrolidine with isatin in acetic anhydride gives a substance known as isatin blue. Proline and isatin give the same product and the blue color is the basis of a color test for such compounds.463-468 The structure 166 has been proposed for isatin blue,461 and other related compounds have also been prepared.461...

A higher-order dependence on nitric acid concentration in the absence of added strong acid (H2S04) was also observed. This, according to Paul, is a consequence of the dual role assumed by nitric acid itself providing the proton acquired in step (a). The nitric acid-acetic anhydride reaction is not a simple one, and requires more study.

Oxidations—4-Vinylpyridine can be oxidized to the glycol by cold permanganate solution333. When the acetic anhydride reaction (p. 340) is applied to 2-styryl- and 2-propenyl-pyridine 1-oxides, some of the glycol is produced in each case. Permanganate has more frequently been used to oxidize 2- and 4-styrylpyridines to pyridine-carboxylic acids i 35 ... 

As shown by reaction 4.4.1, dimethyl ether can also be carbonylated to give acetic anhydride. Reaction 4.4.1 is actually a sum of many reactions. These are shown by (4.4.2)-(4.4.6). As we have already seen, the Rh catalyst is capable of catalyzing (4.4.2) and (4.4.3). Methyl acetate and methanol consumed in these reactions are regenerated according to reactions 4.4.4 and 4.4.5. Reaction 4.4.6 is a well-known reaction of alkyl ethers.
